DERMOT Keely admits he will have to eat humble pie after UCD earned a remarkable European win last night, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.
With St Patrick's Athletic falling to a Europa League defeat in Latvia and Cork City finishing with a disappointing draw at home to KR Reykjavik, the Students were the only one of the four Irish sides in the Europa League to get a first leg win, Collie O'Neill's boys beating Luxembourg side Dudelange 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ryan Swan (right).
Former UCD boss Keely had mocked the idea of the second-tier side being in Europe, via the Fair Play league, but he's now had to change tack. "I'll put on a few pounds next week eating all that pie, well done Collie O'Neill and UCD," Keely said on twitter.
Meanwhile, Cork boss John Caulfield will today seek an explanation after team-mates Billy Dennehy and Mark O'Sullivan appeared to clash late on in their 1-1 home draw.
