IRELAND cap Greg Cunningham has hooked up with Preston in a big to gain more first team football and also win back his place in the Irish squad.

The Galway-born defender, capped four times at senior level by Giovanni Trapattoni between 2010 and 2013, had helped Bristol City win promotion to the Championship last season. Cunningham, 24, will get to play in the second tier but instead he will line out for Preston, also promoted from League One, as he agreed a two-year deal with Simon Grayson's side. "We are very pleased to have got him. He's desperate to do well for Preston North End and try and get back into the Ireland squad and if he does that, hopefully it means we are doing well," said Grayson.

"What you find with Greg is that he is a really good age but he is experienced as well. He has played for some good clubs, knows the Championship and was part of a winning mentality at Bristol City last year."

Bristol boss Steve Cotterill said: "We wish Greg well, he was great for us and we wish him all the best with his new club."
