Given's despair

STUCK in limbo with the window shut -- that's the fate for Ireland stars like Shay Given and Glenn Whelan for the rest of the season as they failed to secure moves on transfer deadline day yesterday.

Internationals Andy Reid (Blackpool), Stephen Ireland (Newcastle United) and Andy Keogh (Bristol City) all followed Ireland captain Robbie Keane by securing moves in the last 24 hours while former UCD man Conor Sammon became an English Premier League player with his £650,000 move from Scottish side Kilmarnock to Wigan.

But there was bad news on the transfer front for some of Ireland's key men as Given and Whelan are now facing life on the bench for the coming months.

Given has played just four times for Manchester City this season and he was desperate to quit Eastlands to gain first team football, but a weekend loan bid from Leicester City failed to materialise.

Late last night there were reports of a possible loan move to Championship side Cardiff City but that deal also fell through.

West Brom tried to sign Whelan from Stoke but the Baggies were unwilling to match Stoke's value of £3m.
