Given could save Magpies

NEWCASTLE United could try to offer Shay Given a return to first-team action this week as the injury-cursed Magpies will seek permission to sign a keeper on an emergency loan deal, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.

With established pair Tim Krul and Rob Elliot sidelined until the New Year, Newcastle have had to rely on the inexperienced Jak Alnwick. But he picked up a shoulder injury in last night's League Cup defeat to Tottenham, where Newcastle leaked four goals, and he's now a doubt for Sunday's local derby at home to Sunderland.

With 17-year-old trainee Freddie Woodman the only fully-fit keeper on the books, boss Alan Pardew will ask the Premier League for permission to sign an experienced keeper on a short-term loan and ex-Newcastle hero Given has today been linked with a possible move.
