Gibson a doubt but Whelan is improving

DARRON Gibson (r) has sustained a knock in training which puts his involvement in Ireland's clash with Scotland next month in doubt but Martin O'Neill has had better knew about Glenn Whelan (above).

O'Neill revealed that Gibson had shipped an injury in training at Everton yesterday morning but that he had heard no further detail than that.

"Gibson has picked up an injury in training which might cause us a problem. If you are playing central midfield you have to get around and his problem is that he hasn't played a lot of football," O'Neill said.

O'Neill confirmed that Wes Hoolahan has been forced to withdraw because of ankle ligament damage but that Whelan could yet be in the running for the game against Scotland.

"Initially I thought Glenn would be out for some time but I spoke to him a few days ago. He is still struggling a little but the injury is actually clearing up and he is giving himself every chance," said the Irish boss.

"Initially I thought Christmas but not the news coming from him and getting better every day," he added.
