Foley flying the flag highest on the continent

We have only a handful of Irish players who are playing with clubs outside of Ireland and Britain, and so far this season it's been a mixed bag for the boys in green on the continent.

In Belgium, former Ireland international DOMINIC FOLEY scored for relegation strugglers Cercle Bruges just after Christmas, his fourth goal of the season.

Six years ago, German-born defender PATRICK KOHLMANN was playing in the same Ireland U21 side as people like Andy Reid, Liam Miller and Glenn Whelan, but has since faded from the international scene.

Playing regularly in front of crowds of 15,000 for German second tier club Union Berlin, Kolhmann has impressed with the club and only last week they handed him a new three-year contract.

In Italy, CONOR McCORMACK is still on the books with Serie B side Triestina, in the second year of a two-year contract, but has yet to make his first team debut, though he has been on the bench a number of times. Former U21 cap JAMES SIMMONDS now plays at Spanish lower league club Écija BalompiĆ©.

Dubliner GARY HOGAN (Skeid) and one-cap wonder JOEY LAPIRA (Nybergsund) both played last season in the Norwegian second division.
