FAI upbeat on Euros bid

THE FAI believe that they can bring the European Championship finals to Dublin after submitting a bid to UEFA to be one of the joint hosts of Euro 2020.

While the next Euro finals will be held in just one country, France, UEFA have decided to spread the 2020 tournament around a number of host cities and Dublin is one of those eager to get on board, hoping to get four group matches and one of the quarter-finals.

"The decision will be made in September and we will have to lobby quite hard to see if we can be one of the host cities," said FAI chief executive John Delaney.

"You have to put your best foot forward and this bid is Government-backed, with great support from the Taoiseach, the Minister for Sport, the DAA (Dublin Airport Authority), the Hotels Federation, Dublin City Council and the Garda Síochána.

"Traditionally the UEFA tournament has been held in one or two countries, but because 2020 is the 60th year of UEFA, they will have 13 host cities to host the tournament, something like 28 cities have applied."
