FAI dismiss Trap Nigeria report

THE FAI are insisting that Giovanni Trapattoni will be in charge of the Republic of Ireland for the European Championship campaign in September -- even though the Nigerian FA are ready to offer the Italian the chance to get to the World Cup finals.

The Nigerians are desperate to have a new coach in place for the finals in South Africa, where they face Argentina, Greece and South Korea in the group stage.

Irish fans were concerned today to read comments from Italian agent Domenico Ricci, who claims to represent Trapattoni, stating clearly that Trap would be interested in the job of leading Nigeria at the finals in South Africa, with one report from Nigeria this morning claiming that Ricci had met with Nigerian FA officials in Lagos yesterday.

"This is a very delicate issue, but of course Giovanni will be interested," Ricci said, claiming that Trap had en exit clause in his contract with the FAI.

"He can leave the Republic if he gets a concrete offer. But that would have to come before March 3 and then he can consider it."

But the FAI, aware that Trapattoni is in demand, were today adamant that he would stay with the Irish side.

"Giovanni is aware of it but there is nothing in it," said an FAI spokesman today.
