Egan elated with loan move

IRELAND U21 cap John Egan hopes that a loan move away from Sunderland can help him gain match sharpness, writes AIDAN FITZMAURICE.

While Sunderland travel to London to face Manchester City tomorrow in the League Cup final, Egan will not be involved as he makes his debut for Southend United today against Wycombe after the clubs agreed a loan move.

Egan suffered a broken leg while on loan to Bradford City last season, an injury which disrupted his progress at Sunderland, but he has since won back his place in the Irish U21 squad and is also in line for first-team action at Southend.

"I was buzzing when I was first asked to come down a day or so ago to Southend United. I've not played first team football in a while, so I'm really looking forward to it," says the Kerry lad.

"Since September, I've been playing U21 football with Sunderland after recovering from a serious injury. So I am delighted to be back playing again and can't wait to get stuck in for Southend. Hopefully I can take my chance."
