Drogs targeting runners-up spot

DROGHEDA UNITED boss Mick Cooke says his players are now targeting a second-place finish in the league table after securing European football for next season.

Friday's 2-1 win over champions Sligo Rovers means that Drogheda are guaranteed a place in Europe in 2013 but a place in the top two can also be obtained, ahead of St Patrick's Athletic, with a win at home to Bohemians in the season finale next Friday.

"We have got Europe and the Setanta Cup for next season, we have won the EA Sports Cup and we can cap it all by winning on Friday and finishing second," says Cooke.

"Our players have been fantastic this season. They stuck to the job, they worked really hard and looked after themselves. We never had a problem with players looking too far ahead, it was always game by game, and now we have the rewards," added Cooke.

"All we can do for next season is go out and improve. Obviously there will have to be changes over the winter but the lads here have shown that we don't need wholesale changes, we will look to bring in more players with European and Premier Division experience."
