Drogs pay the penalty in Galway

POINTS on the board are all that matter at this stage, but Drogheda United's commendable display wasn't rewarded as Galway United emerged 2-1 victors from a game that featured three penalties.

Having soaked up Drogheda's early pressure at Terryland Park, Galway improved and came within a whisker of taking a 31st-minute lead. Derek O'Brien's wing play was inventive and following a furious scramble, Karl Sheppard's header was cleared off the line by Corey Treacy as the teams departed deadlocked at the break.

That changed in the 55th minute when Stephen O'Donnell nudged Galway ahead with a spot-kick after Sheppard had been fouled by Robert Duggan. Drogheda levelled on 61 minutes courtesy of another penalty -- Glen Fitzpatrick scored when Philip Reilly fouled Brennan.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men on 76 minutes when Peter McMahon was dismissed and O'Donnell bagged the third penalty seven minutes from time.
