Doyle: I fear for starting place

KEVIN Doyle is worried that he will not start in Ireland's opening game against Croatia.

The Wolves striker endured a torrid campaign for Wolves, scoring only four goals as they finished bottom of the Premiership.

And he admitted that the increased competition with Ireland's strikers could see him dropped to the bench.

Doyle said: "I wouldn't read 100 percent into what he's been saying (Trapattoni in the press).

"I'm sure he's saying stuff to get back to Croatia. We'll see. The team isn't officially named until an hour and a half before kick off.

"We've competition for places and up front whoever has played seems to have done reasonably well. If one of us ain't playing well, he's pretty quick to bring on someone else."

Doyle has long been considered a first choice for Ireland and has toiled through the years in qualifying games without ever having the chance to play in a major championship.

With Ireland's opening game only two days away, it would be a cruel blow if he were to miss out having been Keane's partner up front for so long.

"I just want to play. I've had six years in or around playing most of the games and I don't want to miss out when it comes to this."
