Irish defender Derrick Williams wants Blackburn Rovers to go for the League One title now that they have secured promotion back to the Championship.

Tuesday's 1-0 win away to Doncaster means that Rovers are guaranteed promotion, with two games to spare but there's still something to play for, Blackburn one point behind table-toppers Wigan.

And Waterford lad Williams, who was called up to the senior Irish squad for the first time last month, wants them to pip Wigan to the trophy.

"We want to set records and we're aiming for top spot," says Williams. "We want the title. Wigan drew so we'll keep being professional and try and take it to the last day, win both games and see where we end up.

"We had a bad first month or so, but the record afterwards is unbelievable. One loss in 33 is special.

"We're just happy that we're back in the Championship now and have a good go at it next year. You play football to enjoy these moments.

"It's been a long season. We were 14 or 15 points behind at one stage, but we're buzzing," added Williams.

Now 25, Williams has thrived at Blackburn since his 2016 move from Bristol City and is one of three ever-presents in the Rovers side which won promotion.

Meanwhile, Preston boss Alex Neil has asked Seán Maguire to recover from a miss in last week's costly draw with Norwich.

"With Sean, if it wasn't for the goals he's scored so far we wouldn't be in the position we are now, challenging," says Neil.

"He was disappointed to miss that chance but he'll come back from it. We have strong characters in the dressing room."
