Dennehy stars as Rovers rescue win

SHAMROCK Rovers were given a real scare by Monaghan United and had to battle from behind to maintain their 100pc record.

Roddy Collins' men took a shock early lead on three minutes as Willo McDonagh flicked Darragh Reynor's floated cross beyond Oscar Jansson in the Rovers' goal.

Tallaght Stadium was stunned into silence but the champions went about restoring parity straight away. Monaghan refused to be intimidated by their more illustrious opponents, with both sides playing good football and creating opportunities.

Rovers finally got back on level terms after the break, with Killian Brennan (inset) capitalising on poor marking to flick in Billy Dennehy's corner to level the game in Tallaght Stadium.

It looked like it would take something special to separate the sides and that's how it proved.

Dennehy was the hero as his 25-yard screamer nestled in the top corner just after the hour mark.

Monaghan United's Darragh Reynor was sent off for a second bookable offence after a rash challenge and the game was over.

Rovers added a third goal before the end as winger Aaron Greene slotted the ball past Chris Bennion with ease.

There were sighs of relief at the full-time whistle as the Hoops blushes were saved by a better second-half showing.
