David de Gea missed Manchester United's 1-0 win over Club America

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is set to stay at Old Trafford after Real Madrid dropped the biggest hint yet that they will end their interest in the Spanish star.

De Gea had been widely tipped to replace Real’s long-serving keeper Iker Casillas, who departed for Porto, this summer.

However, the Spanish giants have not made any official bid for De Gea and last night announced that Keylor Navas will be wearing the Number 1 shirt next season, having signed Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla on a five-year deal last Friday.

It means De Gea must now decide on whether to sign the new £180,000-a-week deal on offer from United, or play out the remainder of his current contract which expires next summer.

Either way, it now looks like United boss Louis van Gaal will have the 24-year-old - who has won the club’s player-of-the-year award for the past two seasons - in his side for the coming season, having told second choice keeper Victor Valdes that he can leave this summer.
