TONY COUSINS hopes the spirit in his Longford Town side can get them over the line and one step closer to a Premier Division return.

The current campaign is Longford's sixth outside the top flight, but there is real hope that Cousins' outfit can win promotion again. First of all, they need to overcome a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their promotion play-off against Mervue United to get through to a second play-off against the side which finishes second from bottom in the Premier Division.

Given that the FAI have already stated that Mervue will not be allowed to compete in the Premier Division, even if they get through the two stages of the play-off, Abbotstown must be privately hoping that Longford overcome the deficit tonight to avoid the embarrassment of Mervue playing for a Premier Division place which they cannot take.

"We're still in with a great chance and we know what we have to do. Hopefully we can just go and deliver in this game tonight," said Cousins.

"We have kept coming back after the knocks we have taken, and we know exactly what we have to do."
