Cole's Chelsea talks collapse Arsenal appeal Vermaelen red Palacios: I am happy at Spurs

Talks between Joe Cole and Chelsea over a new contract have broken down, according to the England midfielder.

The 28-year-old's current deal expires in the summer, at which point he could leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.

However, Cole is keen to sign a new deal with the Blues.

"I've never spoken publicly about contracts before," he said.

"I don't think contracts should really be discussed mid-season. I have always signed mine in the summer in the past.

"But this time it's different. We can't seem to find common ground and it's distracting. At the moment there is no offer on the table, so I know where I stand.

"I still hope to talk in the summer."

Cole has missed much of the season with a serious knee injury and has struggled to force his way into Carlo Ancelotti's team since returning.

The Italian coach said he was "100pc certain" Cole would still be at the club next season.

Arsenal appeal Vermaelen red

Arsenal have appealed against the red card shown to Thomas Vermaelen in Saturday's match against West Ham.

The club confirmed their challenge to the decision last night and the appeal was to be heard in the next 24 hours.

Defender Vermaelen was ordered off shortly before half-time for bringing down Guillermo Franco inside the penalty area.

Arsenal were leading 1-0 and went on to win 2-0, with West Ham's Alessandro Diamanti missing the penalty which followed Vermaelen's dismissal.

Palacios: I am happy at Spurs

Tottenham midfielder Wilson Palacios has played down reports he wants to move to a bigger club, insisting he is happy at White Hart Lane.

The 25-year-old was recently linked with a move to Real Madrid but he claims he is focused on reaching the Champions League with Spurs.

Palacios said: "The truth is I'm very, very happy here.

"We have worked very hard to get to fourth position.

"We are in a great position and we are all very concentrated on keeping that fourth spot."

Tottenham, meanwhile, have agreed a deal with Internacional to buy midfielder Sandro, according to the Brazilian club. The player will remain at Inter until the end of the Copa Libertadores, which finishes in August.
