City eye Boro flier Johnson

Manchester City will try to make up for their shattering Carling Cup semi-final disappointment by engaging in a little bit of retail therapy.

Within an hour of their 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, it emerged City had tabled a big-cash offer for Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson.

The highly rated England U21 winger is out of contract in the summer, and doing a deal now makes sense for Johnson and his club given the amount of cash City have to spend.

There is even talk that Johnson might be allowed to remain at the Riverside until the end of the season, although that might depend on whether Robinho does secure a return to Brazil.

Eleven football fans arrested in the build up to last night's Manchester derby were being held in custody today.

There was a large police presence at Old Trafford last night in a bid to avoid a repeat of scenes at last week's first leg at Eastlands. So far 29 people have been arrested for alleged offences from the first game at Manchester's City's ground.
