Cherries claim Jim Byrne Cup

Orchard rally to seal crown

Cherry Orchard 3

Peamount/Moyle Park 1

We were out at The Lawns in Ballyer when Cherry Orchard played the first round of this competition against Swords/ Everton.

When the away 'keeper was deemed to have fouled in the box and Cherry scored, I thought their name was on it.

At that stage Swords were giving as good as they got, but the 'keeper was red-carded and Cherry sailed to a 7-0 victory. In fairness they probably would have won it anyway.

On Wednesday last Tom Kennedy added another medal to his bulging coffer as The Cherries lifted the Jim Byrne Cup at the expense of Peamount/Moyle Park.

It wasn't looking too good however when they went a goal behind rather bizarrely.

Tom Murphy scuffed a clearance from a back pass and Aaron Gray deposited to the net.

They set about putting matters right from the tip-off after the concession, as they passed the opposition into submission and it was no surprise to see them level matters in the 19th minute.

After some decent approach play Mick Horan flicked a cross from the right into the path of Paul Clare who stole behind the rearguard to score.

Indeed Clare was involved in most of the positive aspects of Orchard's forward play and it was no surprise when he was handed the man-of-the-match trophy at the end of the game.

They went in level at the break but within two minutes of the restart Orchard were in front. Clare again on the right with a cross and a Peamount defender, who I won't name, turned the ball into his own net.

PMP fought back but it was all over on 70 when the Ballyfermotmen bagged a third. Clare cut in from the left, Karl Reddy got a hand on his effort but Gary Byrne was on hand to head home the clincher.
