Chelsea to line up bid for Juve star Iaquinta

CHELSEA boss Carlo Ancelotti (pictured) is considering a move for Juventus and Italy forward Vincenzo Iaquinta.

The 30-year-old is recovering from a serious knee injury and Chelsea will monitor his fitness over the next few weeks before deciding whether to make a move in the transfer window.

Juventus have a surplus of strikers and Chelsea may test their resolve with an £8m offer.

The forward has played only six matches this season, in large part because of the injury suffered in October, and is said to be open to a new challenge away from the Turin giants.

Ancelotti identified him because of his pace, strength and versatility, which he says would be well suited to Chelsea and the demands of the Premier League.

Although ostensibly a centre forward, Iaquinta can operate on the flanks, meaning that he would be of use when Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka are fit for the Stamford Bridge club.

Patrick Vieira's projected move to Manchester City appeared to move a step closer last night after Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho confirmed that the midfield player had played his last game for the club in the 1-0 Serie A victory over Chievo.

"Moving to England? I think so," he said. The Frenchman has to finalise his exit from the club, where he has six months left on his contract. "Nothing has been signed so far, but it is going well," ex-Arsenal midfielder Vieira said.

Arsenal have been closely watching Lacina Traore, the 6ft 8in Ivorian striker valued at £3.5m by Romanian side CFR Cluj. The 19-year-old has scored six goals in 21 appearances this season, his second season at the club after moving from Stade d'Abidjan.

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City will be among the clubs watching Crystal Palace forward Victor Moses against Bristol City on Saturday. Wigan Athletic failed in their attempt to sign the 19-year-old, who has been valued at £4m. Fulham and Birmingham City have held talks about signing Danijel Ljuboja, the Serbian striker valued at less than £1m by French Ligue One side Grenoble. Blackburn Rovers are set to sign Amine Linganzi, the 20-year-old midfield player, from Saint-Etienne after a trial. French side Sochaux are interested in John Utaka, whom cash-strapped Portsmouth wish to offload because of his £80,000 weekly wage, while David Nugent could be recalled from his loan spell at Burnley if Portsmouth's transfer embargo is not lifted and they cannot add to their striking options at Fratton Park.

Jermaine Beckford has handed in a transfer request to the Leeds United board, who have rejected a £1.25m bid from Championship leaders Newcastle United.

Peterborough United expect to sign Charlton Athletic striker Izale McLeod.

Derby County are close to bringing in Bolton Wanderers defender Nicky Hunt on loan.

Hull City have failed to sign USA forward and Benfica forward Freddy Adu after he opted to join Greek side Aris Salonika.
