Celtic seal Van Dijk deal

CELTIC agreed a €2.8million deal with Groningen last night for defender Virgil van Dijk, with personal terms for a four-year deal with the Dutchman already in place, writes Joe McHugh.

Neil Lennon is anxious to complete business early, with Celtic opening their Champions League campaign in the middle of July with three qualifiers to be negotiated to reach the group stage of the competition.

Newcastle, Everton and Brighton have been tracking Van Dijk, but Celtic moved first with a firm offer which Groningen were happy to accept.

Central defender Van Dijk was voted Groningen's player of the year last season as the club finished seventh in the Eredivisie, but missed out on a place in Holland's Under-21 squad for the recent European Championships.
