Castro leads' nure army

THREE PENALTIES, one missed, five goals, a cracking game and an unbeaten record still intact was the order of the day when Terenure entertained St Pat’s in the VEC Terenure last Tuesday evening.

The ’Nure turned on the style in the sunshine as they ran out deserving 4-1 winners and stretched their record this season to five wins and a draw, to keep setting the pace in the DWSL Inter 2 section. In the 20th minute, the home side hit the front and Julie Castro slotted home from the penalty spot. From that moment, the ’Nure never looked back, remaining in control for most of the encounter. But the Saints can look back on two key moments that really did seal their fate.

The first being a penalty they missed five minutes after they conceded their first goal. BRILLIANTLY Zoe Gregory’s effort was brilliantly saved by Terenure ’ keeper Aisling Cusack. The second incident happened inside the opening minute of the second half.

Karen O’Neill chased a throughball that Ciara Mooney seemed to have under her control, however a poor back pass let in O’Neill for a simple tap-in. Two became three for the ’Nure just minutes later and again it was from the spot as O’Neill was taken down in the area and Castro netted for the second time. This time it was down to a stroke of luck as Leanne McDonnell got her hands to the ball, but it slipped over the line.

It was enough to knock the stuffing out of any side but the Saints kept coming forward. They were well served throughout the game by both Vicky Redmond and Ciara Corboy. And all their hard work was rewarded when they reduced the deficit through Sarah O’Donoghue, who cut in from the left and slotted home from an acute angle. It could have been the start of a comeback for the Saints but the home side were never going to undo their good work.

They were quickly back on the front foot and regained their three-goal advantage almost before the Saints finished celebrating. O’Neill, who impressed throughout, was the scorer this time when she expertly chipped home from just inside the penalty area to keep Terenure’s unbeaten flag flying high.
