Bray relegate Athlone

Athlone's brave effort to stay in the Premier Division ended in disappointment as they were relegated after just one season back in the top-flight.

The 2013 First Division champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Bray at Athlone Town Stadium last night after playing the entire second half with ten men.

But they needed to better UCD's result and hope the Students failed to beat Drogheda at the Bowl. However, the College now face the two legged Promotion/Relegation play-off against Galway FC next week.

With his father Garry sitting in the home dug-out as Athlone coach, Bray's Dean Zambra (inset) unleashed a wonder strike to consign Keith Long's side to the dreaded drop.

Just after the hour, a visitors corner wasn't cleared properly. The ball Graham Kelly laid the ball off to Zambra who struck a brilliant 25-yard shot to the top corner of the net.

Bray captain Dave Webster was adjudged to have handled Eric Foley's free under pressure from Alan Byrne.

Striker Philip Gorman then registered his tenth League goal of the campaign from the penalty spot.

Athlone defender Byrne was sent off for a second booking, bringing down Jake Kelly in the 38th minute.
