MIDDLESBROUGH are delighted with the impact made by former Ireland keeper Shay Given since his loan move from Aston Villa.
The 37-year-old made his debut for Boro on Saturday after an emergency loan deal was rushed through and he played a big role in a 1-0 win over Bolton, only the club's second clean sheet in 15 games, and boss Aitor Karanka is glad to have the veteran on board.
"He's a very important player because he has a lot of experience," he said. "I explained the situation to the other players on Friday and everyone understood.
"Goalkeeper is a very special position and he was the best option for the club. On Saturday he didn't have a lot of work but the defenders are calm and know they have a good goalkeeper."
Given is one of only a handful of players to have lined out for each of the 'big three' in England's north-east. He had a long career at Newcastle United, spent time on loan to Sunderland at the start of his career and is now at Boro for a month.
