I WAS very sad to hear of the passing of Eric Barber, a great striker in his day and a man I played against and knew as a schoolboy in Dublin.
Eric was part of a great St Finbarr's side while I was at Stella Maris, before leaving for Old Trafford, and there was a big rivalry between the two teams.
He stayed and as many of that generation did, went on to build fine teams at Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers.
Eric was a quiet lad who blossomed in later years when I met up with him again in the Ireland squad in 1965 on the way to Spain and like myself, he was a great one for a sing song.
He had spells in America, Birmingham City and then in Germany before he returned to his beloved Shelbourne.
He will be missed.
