WEST BROM today insisted that they did all they could to keep the Hull-bound Shane Long at the club.

Long's move is now a formality after the two clubs agreed a fee for the Ireland striker. Once Long can agree personal terms with the Tigers the deal will go through, with the Tipperary man expected to make his debut – alongside another new signing Nikica Jelavic (inset) – against Norwich on Saturday.

West Brom said they had to accept defeat in their bid to keep Long at the Hawthorns. "We began talking to Shane about a new contract last spring and, during the ongoing negotiations, we made him two offers which would have significantly increased his salary," Albion's sporting director Richard Garlick said.

"However, despite our best endeavours, Shane has declined to sign a new contract."
