Awesome Alex cut loose down home straight to beat Sackville

INSPIRED by youth internationals Emily Beatty and Deirdre Duke, Alexandra College produced a scintillating second-half performance to reach next Tuesday's Senior Cup final, eventually winning against a gritty Mount Sackville.

They were made to wait until the final quarter to finally break the deadlock as two very evenly matched sides cancelled each other out for long periods. But once Robyn Traynor -- a last-minute call-up to the semi-final panel -- pummelled home first time a loose ball in the circle, Alex pulled clear, scoring twice in the last 10 minutes.

Sackville's Orla Fox and Emma Sweeney had kept a pacy Alex forward line under wraps for the guts of the tie while soccer underage international Olivia Smartt and left-winger Siun McLoughlin provided dangerous outlets.

Alex's central defensive duo of Leah Lenehan and Nicola Gray were equally unremitting, making for an uneventful first half with just a Gray penalty corner strike to show by way of goal-mouth action.

Duke, though, amended that stat in the first two minutes of the second half with an excellent rush from left to right, drawing a low save from Alison Garrigan.

She fired in further stinging shots, creating her own chances with midfield steals, before a half-blocked pass bounced its way into Traynor, taking little time to adjust and smash past Garrigan.

Aisling Burke sealed the win, rebounding from Kate Lenehan's initial shot and Erica Hinkson added some extra garnish to the scoreline as the lively Beatty found space on the right end-line to lay up a perfect pull back for the forward to tap home.
