Amond back to haunt Hoops as brace sees Sligo through

Two superb finishes by former Hoops striker Pádraig Amond dumped Shamrock Rovers out of the EA Sports Cup and earned Sligo a place in the final with a 2-1 win last night.

The league's top scorer took his tally to 23 in all competitions this season with a brace in front of over 2,000 at the Showgrounds.

Amond rattled home the equaliser just 30 seconds after Sligo 'keeper John Gibson caught Gary Twigg's hopeful lob behind the line. And he produced the winner just four minutes after the restart, when he raced onto Eoin Doyle's slick pass to score.

Monaghan make late surge to leave Lilywhites in shade

GORTAKEEGAN has never been the happiest of hunting grounds for Dundalk and so it proved again last night as Cathal O'Connor's 87th-minute goal sent 1-0 winners Monaghan United into the final.

Alan Byrne should have hit the target for the hosts with a free header in the 55th minute and 11 minutes later Sean Brennan cracked a 35-yard free-kick against the crossbar.

The vital goal came with the game stretched. O'Connor, a former Dundalk player, drilled a vicious left-footed effort past Peter Cherrie at his near post.
