Dundalk are guaranteed a place in Europe for next season as Finn Harps condemned Shelbourne to a dreaded relegation play-off next weekend.
After a dramatic night in the Premier Division season finale, Sligo Rovers are also in with a chance of Europa League football, depending on the outcome in the FAI Cup, but Waterford and St Patrick's Athletic miss out.
Despite a 2-0 loss for Dundalk at home to Sligo, the Louth club claimed a third-place finish thanks to Finn Harps' 1-0 win at home to Waterford. That means that Harps, who looked doomed in August after a run of six straight defeats, avoid the relegation play-off.
A 2-0 defeat for Shels at home to champions Shamrock Rovers, thanks to goals from Jack Byrne and Aaron Greene, means the Reds finish second from bottom and will play Longford Town next Saturday for a place in the Premier Division next season, while Rovers become the first team since since 1927 to finish the season unbeaten.
