Rugby: Vallejo keeps nerve to fire Counsel to Shield victory

Centre Robert Vallejo kept his nerve to strike a match-winning penalty for Good Counsel in this Leinster Schools Section A Junior Shield final at Navan RFC yesterday.

This was a cracking contest. Naas went 6-0 ahead from a penalty and sharply taken drop goal by John O'Brien.

The New Ross boys had Paudie Barden to thank for a lot of lineout ball and eventually Vallejo kicked his first penalty, followed by a try from Robbie Larkin for a 10-6 advantage in the 61st minute. Naas centre Luke Mather looked to have stolen it when going over from O'Brien's quick tap penalty only for Vallejo to hit the winner from 36 metres.
