St Patrick's, Navan, and Pres Bray will collide in the Leinster Schools Junior Cup first round following their respective Fr Godfrey Cup quarter-final wins over St Gerard's School and St Andrew's College yesterday.
Pres powered their way past St Andrew's (22-12), who had the benefit of a first-round win over Wilson's Hospital last week. It didn't make any difference to the Bray boys with Jack Keating, Louis O'Flynn-Martin, Cormac O'Donoghue and Daire Henderson sharing the tries.
The Navan boys showed plenty of resolve to mount a comeback from an 8-0 deficit at Ashbourne RFC to dominate St Gerard's 20-13 by the close of play.
There was an interesting clash of styles as St Pat's played the pressure game in close to expose their lighter opponents. It brought about tries for hooker Shane Faulkner, openside Stephen Keelan and, a little wider out, centre Gareth McGrane
St Gerard's were not intimidated. They fought the good fight and, who knows, might have fared better if they had more runners like their try-scorer Sam Kingston.
The prospects for progress in the Junior Cup are not so favourable for High School as they have drawn the short straw that is Clongowes Wood College as a dubious reward for squeezing out Skerries Community College 13-12 at the ALSAA Grounds.
Blindside John Hackett was the try-poacher supreme at the rear of two lineout-mauls that travelled all the way to the line for what turned out to be the match-winners.
Skerries were thwarted by the superior power of HS. The just couldn't release their speedsters full-back Paul O'Connor and right wing Shane Hickey, their try-scorers, often enough to make it pay.
