Rugby: Columba's strength sees them past Sandford Park

An entertaining Senior A shield final in Kilternan ended with St Columba's taking the title as their superior physical strength came to the fore in a real war of attrition.

Sandford Park will be cursing some handling errors near the finish when there were opportunities to draw level but they will surely accept they were beaten by the better side on the day. A low scoring first half saw Carl Ibe cross the line to break the deadlock after 20 minutes. Sandford responded through a penalty by No5 Mick Kirk.

The Ranelagh men found themselves in front after 10 minutes of the second half when flying winger Elliot Madden used his pace to evade the would be challenges and touchdown. However the lead was short lived as a converted try by Dalton Tice put Columba's back on top.

Browne soon added a penalty as his side became dominant. But it still took some resolute defending at the end to prevent a second Stanford try.
