St Kevin’s College captain Lee Murray led by example as he shot some crucial baskets for his side as Irene O’Mahony’s charges collected the Under 16 C national crown on their first visit to the National Arena.
Murray showed terrific execution from the three-point zone and his contribution will no doubt be long remembered by team-mates and supporters alike.
It was a brave effort from Dunboyne who remained close on Kevin’s tails right until the final minute.
With Matthew O’Meara rebounding strongly on the inside for the Meath men, Dunboyne were within a point of their opponents when Kevin’s landed back-to-back baskets from Daniel Foy and San Diego to open up a five-point lead.
However, a basket from Darragh Gilmartin was to put St Peter’s back in contention at the end of the first quarter as they trailed 11-8 to Kevin’s.
However, Kevin’s were to begin the second period brightly with a clever dribbile by Owens seeing him lay up under the baskets with Murray then intercepting to bring the gap out to seven. Peter’s however were shown plenty of mobility through Niall Carolan and Niall Carolan before Kevin’s hit them for two baskets from opposite sides of the court from Foy and San Diego to regain the lead at the interval, 22-19.
A three-pointer from Murray saw Kevin’s begin the third quarter in final style with an offload from Owens then setting up Foy for a sidecourt basket.
Peter’s however were to record successive three-point plays from Finn Hughes and O’Meara but crucially a last minute basket from Murray was to see Kevin’s up 33-29 heading into the final period.
The last period began with three-pointers at each end and with 4.30 to go Peter’s had levelled with baskets from O’Meara and Bermingham before MVP Owens picked off two superb baskets. And while Gilmartin would bring Peter’s to within a point of St Kevin’s, they were then knocked back on the seat of their pants following another three pointer from Murray.
And from their Kevins closed the game out with baskets from San Diego and Owens.
