The Leinster schoolboys’ hockey season is building to an exciting crescendo with plenty of competitions beating the frozen weather conditions to move a number of sides within a couple of wins of glory.
In the Senior Trophy, Kilkenny College came from a goal down to beat King’s Hospital 2-1. Finn Harvey put KH in front but a pair of goals either side of half-time took the tie away from them.
Leinster Under-18 skipper Sam Grace (pictured above) drew the cats level before half-time before Jack Bennett got what proved to be the winning goal to win their place in the semi-finals of the competition where they will face St Columba’s.
Columba’s were 4-1 winners over Newpark with Wolfe Purcell, Cormac McCooey, Douglas Boyd Crotty and Andrew Brady on the mark for the Rathfarnham school.
On the other side of the draw, Sutton Park held off Mount Temple to make it through as Keith O’Hare and Jack Ryan built a 2-0 first-half lead. Temple levelled up though late on via John Mullins only for O’Hare to score a penalty stroke in dead time at the end of the tie.
Sutton are also through to the semi-finals of the senior league after a single goal from O’Hare saw them defeat Sandford Park – who had a chance to overtake them – 1-0 on January 19. Sutton go through with Wesley who had a perfect record from their Group B games.
Elsewhere, St Andrew’s won the Whiteside Trophy, beating Bandon 7-1 before undoing Wesley 1-0 to complete their second title of the year.
