Athletics: West & North Leinster: Nasir edges out Hayes in final dash for line of 800m

MUSTAPHA NASIR of HFCS Rathcoole won a dramatic senior boys’ 800m at the second day of the West Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Santry.

Only in the final strides of the race did Nasir shake off the challenge of Conall Hayes from  Coláiste Chiaráin.

In the junior boys’ 800m, Michael Murphy of Belvedere led home a packed field of over 20.

Adding the inter 400m hurdles to the 400m flat title he had won earlier was Simon Essuman of Templeogue. Another double winner was Rachel Dunne of St Colmcille’s who won the inter girls 300m hurdles and flat 300m titles.

Seán Lawlor of Kylemore College reversed the result of the 100m two days earlier by beating Eoin Doherty of Drimnagh Castle for the 200m title.

An impressive winner of the inter boys’ javelin was Justinas Gerduilis of Luttrellstown who threw 47.84m.

Carla Sweeney of St Mac Dara’s, who had won the 400m on the first day of competition, was a clear winner of the senior girls’ 800m,

At the second day of the North Leinster Championships, also in Santry, Eoin Strutt (pictured) of St Fintan’s won the senior 800m in style.

Winning the senior 3000m to add to the 1500m title she had won two days earlier was Hope Saunders of Mount Temple.

Identical twins Kate and Aine Heneghan of Scoil Mhuire in Trim caused a few heads to turn when they finished first and second in the senior girls’ 400m hurdles.
