McDonnell leads from front to rule seniors in Park

LARKIN Community College, Kylemore College, Coláiste Eoin and Rathmines College finished top of the winner's podium winning the overall schools titles in various categories at last week's CDVEC SCC Cross Country finals in Phoenix Park.

There were some excellent individual performances from several students with Nicholas Melia of Coláiste Eoin, Inchicore College's Paul McDonnell, Tiffany Heary of Larkin CC and Crumlin College's Nadia Egan the pick of the bunch.

Minor, Junior and the Intermediate girls' teams took on the 1km course. The intermediate boys and senior girls race was 2km with the senior boys facing three laps of the open course.

The Intermediate race threw up an absorbing contest between Melia and Coláiste Dhúlaigh's Kevin Darling. With half a kilometre to go, Melia made the all-important move to finish strongly and claim gold, Darling took silver with his colleague, Laurie Hamilton, bagged bronze.

Heary came into the final bend in fourth place in the Girls Junior final, before leaving all in her wake.

McDonnell put in a flawless run to win the Senior Boys' 3km race, leading from the onset. Egan powered home in front of the Rathmines pair of Emily Rochford and Leanne Fitzgerald respectively in the Girls' Senior race.
