Magic Murphy is Good as Gold with Lisburn victory

BADMINTON: Good Counsel’s Nicholas Murphy, from Wexford, won the Badminton England Gold singles event in Lisburn last weekend.

The Leinster boy fought hard to reach the final and his opponent was Lisburn’s Jonathan Harron. Both athletes met in last month’s Ulster U17 final, with Jonathan taking that title on that occasion.

Last weekend’s final was a three-set marathon, with both competitors playing their best badminton.

Nicholas lost the opener 16-21 but fought hard to win the middle set 21-18 and continued his winning ways by taking the final set 21-18 and winning his first Badminton England Gold event.

Leinster and Dublin’s Paul Reynolds (Terenure College) and Nhat Ngugen defeated Scotland’s Stuart Dyce and Steven Stallwood in the U13 Gold doubles final with a two-set win – 21-16, 21-8.
