Hurling: Rís rampant in second half to secure Shield

Ardscoil Rís produced a strong second-half display to claim the Dublin Schools Juvenile Hurling 'A' Shield at O'Toole Park yesterday.

The Griffith Avenue boys went in a point behind at the break, but they scored 2-6 after the interval to claim the title.

They were matched toe to toe by a valiant Coláiste éanna side who did everything they could to gain the title but their late comeback was not enough.

Ardscoil Rís midfielder Shane Bennett was the star of the show as the rain dried up on the Crumlin venue, ably abetted by centre forward Sean Murphy whose scoring prowess was crucial.

éanna were affected by the loss of regular goalkeeper Andrew Boyd Lyons whose injury meant a reshuffle that saw influential midfielder Keith Robinson go in goal.

He came out late in the game and grabbed two goals, but it was in vain.

Ardscoil ran into an early 0-3 lead through Murphy, Brian Bolger and Sean O'Meara, but the Ballyroan boys weren't rattled and they were ahead within 12 minutes.

First Patrick Lyons pointed after a good block from Sean Brennan, before Andrew Coughlan won a free and James Madden's delivery deceived the Ardscoil defence and dropped into the net.

Murphy pointed for a free but at that stage it was all one-way traffic, and Madden won and scored a free, Colm Basquel pointed and Madden sent over another.

Trailing by a goal, Shane Corry scored a crucial point before the break, and a length-of-the-field move started by full-back Ruairi Martin and ended by Murphy meant that there was just a point at the interval.

And the northsiders kept the momentum going, scoring 1-4 to 0-1 in the 15 minutes after the break.

Murphy sent over another free, Bennett went on a driving run up the left and scored a brilliant point. Murphy then gave Robinson no chance with a rising drive and the two terrors added further points.

Robinson struck back with a 21-metre free with 12 minutes remaining, but Bennett eased any worries with a good point.

Murphy added a point, before full-forward Fiachra Maher finished the job with a kicked goal.

Robinson came out the field and smashed the post with a shot that would have graced a senior championship game; he followed up with his second goal but it was too little too late.
