Left-wing Gavin Hughes sparked an unlikely Wesley College revival that sealed the Powerade Leinster Fr Godfrey Junior Cup Plate over CUS at Templeogue yesterday.< /P>
"We have been progressing nicely for the last few years," said coach Carl Hosford.
Wesley went out to Roscrea (10-5) in the Fr Godfrey Cup quarter-final -- the Plate competition is for those schools knocked out in the first two rounds of the Fr Godfrey Cup -- after bouncing Skerries (31-5) in the first round.
CUS came through under the radar as they received a bye in the first round of the original competition only to fall short in a quarter-final replay defeat to Pres Bray.
It must be said they looked the better side for long stretches, especially in the first-half when they simply nullified the advantage of the wind by using the ball intelligently, their captain Luke Trench leading the way.
CUS looked to have done the hard work when holding Wes' to an 8-5 lead with the benefit of a wind to come after the break. Then, number eight Trench stormed to the posts for wing Evan McGovern to convert for a 12-8 lead.
From nowhere, Hughes took off on a weaving run, swerving out of harm's way for a try, converted by Sam Tully.
"It is moments like that, at this age grade, which can totally change a game. Confidence came and we were a different team," he said.
Right wing Young Chae Soon's scored the clinching try in the 65th minute.
