WITH domestic duties boxed off thanks to Friday's superb FAI Cup win over Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers, Lee Desmond now puts his mind to international matters

The 2015 league season has been a trying one for St Patrick's Athletic but the cups are working out well as they began their defence of the FAI Cup with a win 2-1 over the Hoops.

So Desmond and his Saints team-mate Sean Hoare were on a high when they hooked up with the Irish U21 squad ahead of a game against an England 'C' team today, a chance for the home-based pair to impress.

"The Cup win was great but I have put that to one side now," says defender Desmond.

"It's great to be in the squad and the longer you stay involved, the more caps you get, the better.

"I think the senior team management have a real interest in the underage teams. It's a big ask for any player in this league to get into the senior international squad but at least they are taking an interest now where previous managers didn't show the same interest," added the former Newcastle United and Shelbourne man, a very impressive presence in the Saints side of late.

"I feel as if I am still breaking into the team, I am still learning from the likes of Jason McGuinness, Ger O'Brien and Kenny Browne," he added.

King's U21 squad face an England side made up of Conference players in Galway today (3pm) and then face the England U21 side proper on Friday in a game played behind closed doors at the FA's HQ.
