Timoney try burns Wood as 'Rock rule

IT took a 63rd-minute try from Blackrock College captain Nick Timoney to finally break Clongowes Wood College 22-17 in a thrill-a-minute Beauchamps Leinster Schools Senior Cup final at The RDS yesterday.

'Rock applied enough pressure to win three games in the first half, Clongowes simply refusing to yield to the inevitable as their out-half Fergal Cleary led the resistance.

A savage double-blow came in the form of flanker Conor Oliver stealing down the short side in the 29th minute and centre Jack Power putting Hugh Keenan over for Sean Kearns to nail his second conversion for 14-0 in the 33rd minute.

The Clane school took this manfully and struck back with a penalty by full-back Alan Hughes on the half-time whistle followed by a Cleary try converted by Hughes in the 37th minute.

Then, they were in front when dangerman Cian O'Donoghue finished brilliantly on the left for Hughes to make it 17-14 before Kearns levelled it up from a 56th-minute penalty and Timoney had the final say.
