Suttonians claim Cup treble

SUTTONIANS' U15s won the Leinster Metro Cup for the third year running, beating Malahide RFC in Westmanstown.

The game began with all the expected tension of a Cup final, no quarter asked or given, the game barely moving from the centre of the park, and both teams feeling each other out and battling hard for possession and territory.

The collisions were large and the contest at the breakdown key in the early exchanges, the advantage swinging both ways.

Suttonians scored in the clubhouse corner to go five points up, but Malahide hit back immediately with one of their own and the seesaw rhythm of the game looked set to continue.

The pivotal period in the game came in the lead up to half-time as Suttonians managed to create width to score twice before the break, opening a gap that Malahide couldn't close.

The second half was dominated by the Sutton-based side, but Malahide, under the spirited leadership of Conor Mahon, fought manly throughout, and managed to cross the whitewash again.

Mahon's opposite in the scrum, Jack Aungier, was dominant in the second half, adding a hat-trick of scores to a first-half brace to post an impressive five tries.

Malahide were champions in Division 1 this year and reached two finals in a fine season. Suttonians themselves were the Premier Division champions, with their U15 B team also bringing the Division 2 title back to Station Road.

The clash of Northside heavyweights went to the men from Sutton, however, and Dylan Corrigan Forbes lifted the silverware to complete a three-in-a-row of Metro Cup wins and a 2012/13 treble for the Suttonians U15s.
