The always impressive Skerries under 16-squad hosted 29 players and coaches from Grenoble between Thursday 14th March and Sunday 16th March 2014.
From the moment the visiting squad arrived in Skerries and their flag was hoisted at Holmpatrick, the hosts looked after their French guests with traditional Irish warmth and hospitality.
A full calendar of activities including Skerries sea tours and paintball in Courtlough, culminated in a fantastic day on Saturday at Skerries Rugby club starting with a match between Skerries Under 16s and the "GUC" Squad, and finishing with a bit of a hooley in the club.
Despite the visitors' powerful forwards and a skilful and swift back line, the home side held their nerve and responded with equally skilful ball-handling and excellent tackling.
The match progressed at a frantic pace and the home team's excellent stamina and fitness kept them going strongly for the 70 minutes. At full time, the final score was 26-7 to the home side. Point scorers were – tries for Jack Ferguson, David Goodman, Harry Coscoran and Ryan Carthy, with Ferguson converting three.
The squad are grateful to all who helped make the "GUC" visit such a resounding success, the parents who hosted the visiting squad, Noel Smyth and his team for providing excellent club facilities and to Peter Murphy who was instrumental in organising the details on the French side. Roll on the return match.
