Tag rugby teams have begun organising all over the country last week as registrations went live online for Bud Light Tag, the IRFU's tag rugby programme.
More than 1,000 teams are predicted to play in Bud Light Tag Leagues this summer, meaning over 12,000 players across all four provinces will be signed up. It's the proverbial 'game of two halves' with the leagues hosted mainly tailored for mixed social teams (teams made up of both men and women) but some do host women's, men's and vets leagues (men over 33). These leagues will be specially graded so all skill levels from the dab-hand A-grader to the beginner will have teams to compete against.
"This summer will be our biggest yet as people get a taste for this non-contact form of rugby. It will also benefit our host rugby clubs during their off-season, bringing extra people through their gates to enjoy themselves or even take up membership of the club," says Olly Hodges, IRFU leisure rugby manager.
A typical Bud Light Tag season for a team will continue for nine or 10 weeks with one match per week, starting in May. Registration ranges between €400 and €550 per team, depending on the host venue. This provides great value to all participants at only €5 per week per player.
Registering a team also gives a player the chance to win VIP prizes to an Ireland home RBS Six Nations game at Croke Park. All information on registration, competition draws, Bud Light Tag venues and much more, can be found on www.irfutag.ie or by contacting the IRFU on firstname.lastname@example.org.
