Minis rugby on rise at Athy

ATHY minis rugby has entered into the new year in good health with growing numbers boding well for the the club, both now and in the coming years.

Players are coming into the club from schools in the town and surrounding districts and a lot of the credit must go to Athy RFC, in conjunction with Leinster Rugby, for their commitment to the CCRO programme.

The programme has been running in the north Laois and south Kildare areas for over 10 years with more than 16 primary schools reaping the benefits. Current players in the Athy senior squad were first introduced to rugby through the programme.

Training on Thursdays at 7pm see numbers of over 200 players in teams in every age group from U7 to U12. A big thank you to the coaches of each team, parents and minis co-ordinator Ollie Henry. As well as commitment to general coaching duties, the coaches have also committed to personal coaching development through the 'Coach the Coaches' programme as well as Mini and Foundation courses run by Leinster Rugby.
