Lansdowne get Metro defence up and running

The first round of the Newstalk Metropolitan Cup kicked off at the weekend, with four keenly contested games and one match falling foul of the icy conditions.

In a replay of last year's quarter- final, holders Lansdowne got their campaign off to a winning start with a strong performance against a very spirited Coolmine side, who asked questions of them for long periods. Last year's beaten finalists, Monkstown, were seen off by UCD on the astroturf in Belfield.

Not only were Garda the only junior club to come through the first round, they were the only team to win away from home in a very hard-fought game in Sutton. In the remaining first-round game, Old Wesley came through at home to Greystones. Coolmine, Greystones, Monkstown and Suttonians now head for the first round of the newly introduced Metropolitan Plate.
