IN March 1985, Palmerston FC were the first Irish rugby club to be invited to take part in the London Irish Festival of Mini Youths rugby.

Since that visit, it is estimated that more than 2,500 children and parents, including future senior interprovincials Luke Fitzgerald (Leinster), Eoghan Hickey (Leinster/Munster), Malcolm O'Kelly (Leinster), Damian McCabe (Connacht) and Neil Walsh (Ulster) have proudly travelled to represent De La Salle Palmerston.

This year, the festival's 28th, a touring party of more than 100 U11 and U12s travelled from Kirwan Park.

On the Wednesday prior to departure, Leinster legend Isa Nacewa visited Salmo to present each of the players with their tour kit.

Career

After the presentations, Isa kindly agreed to a question and answer session about his rugby career to date and offered loads of tips on the importance of good nutrition and regular training, along with wishing the players the very best on this year's tour.

He then posed with each child for a photograph and signed their jerseys.

Leinster Rugby can be very proud of how well he represented them on the night and the inspiration he gave to the team.

During the tournament, the U12s played four games in the plate competition, defeating London Welsh, drawing with Teddington and Chipstead and beating Ealing in the semi-final, setting up an all-Leinster (and Dublin) final against Clontarf.

The Salmo boys saw off 'Tarf 3-0 and, remarkably, conceded no tries in any of their games.

For the second time in three years, silverware from the festival has returned to Salmo.

Thanks again to Isa for his inspirational words to our boys and roll on next year and tour number 29!
