Galwegians hit gold as battle of 'Briggan is a roaring success

Balbriggan RFC held their first U17 blitz last Saturday, involving eight teams, with those travelling furthest, Galwegians and Portlaoise, winning their pools.

The Westerners also had host club Balbriggan, Athboy and Suttonians II in their pool. Suttonians were runners-up, having overcome Balbriggan in their critical match, while in pool 2 it was Portlaoise that came through undefeated followed by Terenure, who edged Clontarf in an exciting match, with Suttonians I making up the pool.

In the semi-finals, Portlaoise eventually ran out winners against Suttonians, but it was Suttonians who nearly took the lead but their winger lost control of the ball when going over the line.

Portlaoise scored probably the try of the tournament when one of their players angled a clever kick ahead that bounced up for him to beat the defence to the ball and score under the posts. Galwegians were too strong for Terenure and kept up their winning ways against a Portlaoise side who seemed to have run out of energy. Terenure just edged out Suttonians in the third-place play-off.

After the medal ceremony the teams headed off to watch the Leinster match. A big thanks to Balbriggan Youths chairman for organising the event, and Balbriggan are looking forward to a bigger and better event next year.
