Finnish aim to Get Into Rugby

LEINSTER Rugby Coach Development Officer, Derek Maybury, is just back from Finland where he was helping the Finland Rugby Federation and FIRA/AER to deliver a 'mass participation' event based on the IRB's Get Into Rugby programme.

Get Into Rugby is designed to educate teachers in how to deliver rugby as part of the school curriculum.

Based on his experience in the area of underage rugby and his particular interest in coach/teacher development across this stage of rugby, Derek was selected to travel to Kuopio (five hours north of Helsinki) to run the two-day training event.

Assisted by the Ari Tikkanen (Youth Development Officer, Finland Rugby Federation) and Stephen Whittaker (Technical Director, Finland Rugby Federation) the first day centred around teacher training with modules on Teaching Rugby Skills among others.

On the second day the teachers got to put into practice the lessons of the previous day when local children (aged 10-15) gathered to learn how to play rugby. Working in small groups the teachers worked closely with the children to teach them the principles and core skills of the game – with Derek, Ari and Stephen there to support both teachers and children throughout.
