Gordon D'Arcy's rugby career will end with the conclusion of the World Cup.
The IRFU has handed the 35-year-old centre of 81 international caps a four-month contract extension to what has been a 17-year career.
"It has always been an honour to represent my country," he said in an Open Letter this morning.
"I hope to continue that over the coming months and help to achieve something with this very special group of players and staff at the Rugby World Cup."
D'Arcy (pictured right) will finish out this season for Leinster.
He will then return to pre-season in July and work towards making the cut for the World Cup squad or, if necessary, train and play with his province on standby, in case of injury to others.
